We recommend that you consider the following before purchasing bamboo.
- Bamboo splits, but it does not split into pieces. It can remain durable for many years despite the presence of noticeable vertical splits.
- Bamboo is generally stronger and better built than rattan or wicker. This is one reason why bamboo costs more.
- Ask about pest control. Bamboo from tropical climates is often infested and needs to be fumigated before shipment. Importers who fail to do this may see numerous pinholes from bugs when their shipment arrives.
- Large reputable companies who display at major furniture shows typically do not offer better quality. They often buy from the same manufacturers as small companies but they have higher overhead and therefore higher retail prices.
- Ask about delivery. Bamboo is lightweight but bulky. Therefore, shipping rates are often significantly higher than for an equal weight of furniture or handicrafts made from other materials.
